June 2003 |
In June 2003, we vacationed in the Colorado Rockies visiting Denver, Rocky Mountain National Park and the Silverthorne ski area about an hour west of Denver. We spent the first 3 days in the Denver area & then met Grandma & Grandpa Williamson & Uncle Jim at the YMCA in Estes Park, CO (just outside of RMNP). We spent the last two days in Silverthorne checking out that area and riding the Alpine slides before heading back to Denver to fly home.

Our cabin at the YMCA of the Rockies. We stayed at the Summit
facility in the Eidolon cabin. The cabin was rustic but very nice.
The view from the front porch was beautiful looking out over snow covered
peaks in the national park. We'll definitely stay at the "Y" again.

On Tuesday Jim, Tom and Michelle hiked about 10 miles to Sky Pond (el.
~10,900 ft) from the Glacier Gorge
trail head and then took a side trip to Mills Lake. About a third
to half of the hike was through snow. We got
an early start and were able to get off the trail right when the thunder
started.

Tom on rock at Sky Pond. The pond is just under 11,000 ft and peaks around are about 12,000 to 13,000 feet high.

Jim took this great 360 degree shot at Sky Pond. He lightened and darkened
individual shots and then stitched them together. That's Michelle in the center
of the photograph. Just to the right of Michelle is the access back down valley.
The entire slope just over the lip in the background was covered in snow.
On Wednesday Michelle and Tom hiked a one-way 8.5 mile hike from the
Bear Lake trail head to the Fern Lake
trail head seeing Lake Helene, Lake Odessa and Fern Lake. About
half of this hike was through deep snow.
Michelle hiking somewhere between the Bear Lake trail head and Lake
Helene maybe 2 miles into the hike.

Hiking down from Lake Helene to Lake Odessa looking back up canyon.
The entire morning was overcast but we luckily avoided rain. The trail in this section was pretty sketchy with long drop-offs.
It would not have been much of a problem if it was not covered with snow.

We wanted to get my mom out on a trail in the mountains so we found an easy loop around Bear
Lake for her to try. Cooper went along too for his first hike in the woods. The trail was pretty flat
but he still wanted to be picked up and carried after a while when we got to an uphill section. Trout
were spawning in a little stream at the back of the lake.

We took my mom on a short hike to Adams Falls near Grand Lake when we left the park.
