I spent about 4 months in Alaska over two summers in 1997 and 1998.  I was working at the end of a pipeline in a remote area of Alaska.  No roads went to the location.  We had our own runway and the crew worked a seven days on/seven days off shift.  Bears and moose were always around and the crew usually did not go outside without guns.  The site was located next to Lake Clarke National Park so it was in a beautiful setting.  We were a few miles from Mt. Redoubt which is a glaciated volcano that erupted as recently as the 1980's.  In fact, volcanic ash is still located around the site up to ~6 feet deep.   Fortunately, I was able to take some time off and explore Alaska a little bit too.

Flight seeing around Mt. McKinley in a small five seater airplane.  Probably one of the best day excursions I have ever taken.
